Cigarettes Kill Five Million People Each Year

April 14th, 2008

smokerAre you a smoker? be careful! because according to the report the WHO world health agency, every year at least five million people died from smoking cigarettes. Smokers not only harm themselves. In the report mentioned, at least 600 thousand people died because of inhaling cigarette smoke indirectly.

The death rate from smoking is likely to continue to grow. In a new report on tobacco use and control, such as dilansirAssociated Press, the UN says nearly 95 percent of the population is not protected by the law to ban smoking.

The report is called the strategy applied by some countries to reduce smoking, such as protecting people from the smoke, to enforce the prohibition of tobacco advertising and raise taxes on tobacco products. But only 10 percent of the population covered by those rules.

“People need more than just being told that cigarettes were harmful to health,” said Douglas Bettcher, Director of the WHO one. “The government they must apply the WHO Framework Convention.”

But the WHO policy was considered to be less telling. “Raising taxes and banning tobacco product advertising, will not address the root causes of why people smoke,” said Basham, Director of the Institute of Democracy in London.

According to Basham, people will avoid smoking if the economic life is increasing and more educated. Therefore, the WHO officials Basham asked to focus also on antipoverty measures, though it is outside the mandate of WHO as a health institution.
